Cocooning Heart This has been an eye opener, going crazy thinking of what to do. I asked a friend to lend me a Moog. In kind, he responded. Made a space up in the attic for my head to make some music, make it love me. I wrote a song each day, with all of this heart's ponderings. Kept my expressions short and polite, just enough to placate this heart. I'm tired of being the one to listen, now I'll make some music and make it love me. There was a simple answer to this. I'm significantly better, now I'm singing every letter. I know what I want and what I want is you, and it wouldn't be had you not wanted me too. I'll keep filling in this space with love to part, cause the music says it loves me. I'll keep filling my cocooning heart, making music cause it loves me. Now there's no space, between me and what I want to sing to you. I'm free to dance upon the horizon. That uncomplicated line. It never breaks, it never parts. The same above the same below me. I'll keep filling my cocooning heart, making music cause it loves me.

The kind of love that's blind. It can take forever knowing. The kind of love that changes. Full of wonder and surprise. There's beauty in the weaving, and healing in each measured Line. Took our own time to mend. Navigate the space in the room. It never denied you being, the most colourful thread in the loom. The kind of love we share, is the thread of which we're made up. The many roads we've wandered, every corner a surprise. Took our own time to mend, navigate the space in the room. You were always to me, the most colourful thread in the loom. The kind of colours I could never find if I was looking. The ruby in your lips. The blue that's in your eyes. There's beauty in the weaving and healing in each treasured line. Took our own time to mend, navigate the space in the room. Never stopped us from being the most colourful thread in the loom.

I was young, I had a voice, I didn’t own it. Because my stepfather he never encouraged it. Because he never had the time to cry to a song. I was young, I had a voice then didn’t want it. And my mother only wanted me to show it. She only ever wished that I, wished that I, would shine. Shine I was young, I had a voice but didn’t grow it. There was pressure in my life to ignore it. I was told there wasn’t money in crying to a song. Shine I was young, I had a voice but didn’t need it. There were other ways to pay my rent. More monetary ways my time, be spent. But all she wanted, all she wanted was for me, to shine.

The pub was very small. The face was blacmk from the shutters drawn. There were songs in the back, and the tap was on. Friends taking turns, to sing Another one. The tunes were old and green. Running thick with the blood Of a rebel theme. There were Songs from Pre-Christianity. Verses as long as it takes to drink another one. I’m sorry I forgot to make it home when I said I would. With no desire to be that late, gravity had a plan, a twist of fate. Like an orbit of rock form outer space. Destiny to collide at my own pace Into the bar. I’m sorry I forgot to make it home when I said I would.

Once, I was lost To the point of disgust I had in my sight Lack of vision Lack of light I fell hard I fell fast Mercy me It'll never last then, in the dust All the things We discussed Were thrown to the wind So at last We begin 'cause we fall hard We fall fast Mercy me It'll never last

In the face of the day. On your face the light, porcelain. Tell me all that you have, and you’ve let go. What makes your day. What puts the smile in your eyes. What fills the whole of your life. What makes you happy. There’s nothing lost on me. All the things that you’ve had. The people who’ve been and gone. Tell me the lot, I’ve got all my life. What makes your night. What puts the stars in the sky. What lights the spark in your eye. What makes you happy. There’s nothing lost on me. In the face of the day. In the day your face, porcelain. Tell me all you think wrong, that you’d put right. There’s nothing lost on me. What makes your day. What puts the smile in your eye. What makes your night. What puts the stars in the sky. What makes your day. What puts the smile in your eye. What makes your night. What puts the stars in the sky. What fills the hole in your life. What makes you mine. There’s nothing lost on me.

about

Soft, spangled emotions sung with an open and heavy 'Cocooning Heart’. A collection of expansive, melancholy, psychedelic folk balladry born from an inward exploration of mind and soul during the forced exile of a pandemic lockdown. There is no sense of electrifying invention here, merely a songwriter practicing catharsis by perfecting his craft. "I’m not trying to reinvent something necessarily, just write a good simple song that could’ve been written 40 years ago or in 40 years". Songs that co-exist seamlessly with Myles O’Reilly’s love for movie soundtracks and the minimal-ambient genre. There is a large dynamic range between Cocooning Hearts grinding windswept drones and angelic ethereal reverbs. Unrepeatable rhythms from abstract jazz brushes, acoustic guitar supported by grand string arrangements, winding harmonies and bird-song synth sounds among other subtle touches give this record a richness that unveils more with each listen. The kind of album you want to listen to on a rainy day, or at that dinner date with your prospective or long-term other half.

This album is dedicated to the two most important people in my life. To my dear wife Aideen Macken for her love, loyalty and commitment through our 17 years of union, and to my late mother Monika. This is the album I promised to her as she crossed over, and she has been present during every second if it’s manifestation. Thank you to all the people in my life who encouraged me to sing again, who have said and done things that stuck with me through my years of denial. Most notably Colin Vearncombe (RIP), Camilla Griehsel, Rónán Ó Snodaigh, Donal Scannell, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Stephen Mogerley, Gavin Glass, Branwen Kavanagh, Diarmuid Mac Gloinn, Sean Mac Erlaine, Sinead Troy, Aoife Woodlock and the person who from beyond the grave finally pushed me to make this album, the late Fergus O’Farrell. You passed at the age of 48 years with only one wish, to finish your album. So here I am after 48 years, releasing mine. Respect due to Rod Morris for answering my plea for a loan of a synthesizer (as something to do) during the pandemic lockdown of 2020 and arriving at my door with a Moog. Its many mesmeric dials and parameters opened my cocooning heart to music again, and a cosmic universe of sound and exploration. I’m grateful for all my patrons at Patreon.com/mylesoreilly for essentially funding this adventure and finally I want to thank all the people who have worked so closely with me as a filmmaker but have shown support in my singing, especially Donal Dineen, James Yorkston, Glen Hansard, Lisa O’Neill, Claire Leadbitter, Rhob Cunningham, Stephen James Smith, Oisín Furlong, Anna Mieke, Brían Mac Gloinn, Louise Barker and Laura Quirke. My respect for you all has no bounds, so your encouragement, however small, has been a great fuel for confidence in the nakedness of this return to using my voice.
